A balanced life

We usually talk about a balanced diet, what about a balanced life. The concept of work- life balance is a bit of a myth and not realistic for modern work practices - but thanks to a pandemic a lot of organisations have restructured the way we work. From remote working, to flexible work pattern and so forth a lot has changed in 2020. I used to work for a company that thought it was bizarre to work from home. Given the current state, they have been forced to build laptops for thousands of employees and offer cloud-based systems in the space of 3 months. This was a change that seemed impossible for 5 years ago. A digitally transformed organisation where employees can work remotely can support the great dream of a work-life balance, especially for women.

Accepting you cant do it all

The first step is accepting you cants do everything. This means setting boundaries with yourself and others, and prioritising the most important jobs. Working from home does not mean you have more capacity to take on more task - it means you can spend more time with your family.

Children

We're having children older so we're further along in out careers. its a good time to keep pushing yourself, if thats what you want to do, to advance your career. But you need a good support network at work and at home to help you.

partners and friends

It's equally important to keep investing in relationships with partners and friends. You can rely on them to keep you sane and support you.

Wellbeing

Women tend to be bad at putting their health as a priority. We need to take care of our diet, exercise and sleep routines, even when its tempting to neglect them in busy times. Our mental health is important, and we need strategies to help us cope with what can, at times, be overwhelming amounts of pressure and work.

Digital Detox

We are surrounded by emails, texts and digital media - it can be all consuming and increase anxiety. What is really the point of announcing your newest car, house or showing off on instagram  about your latest accomplishment - except it is to lift someone else. The act of scrolling endlessly on social media causes more harm than good. our phones are designed to keep us addicted, and sometimes we need to set FIRM boundaries with ourselves over their use. we all need help powering down at times.

Thanks to Debbie Wosskow and Anna Jones for their great advise in their book for women - Believe, Build and Become.
